Guided Reading

GUIDED READING and Centers:

"Matching books to children works only within a balanced literacy program, in which children have many opportunities to share and choose from a wide range of 'unleveled' texts.  It's purpose is defeated when it becomes the whole program"
from Matching Books to Children  by:  Claire Wille

Daily, in my classroom, we have 20 minute guided reading groups and I try to see each group and child everyday.  Children read at their level only,  during reading groups.  I move them up to the next levels when they have tested out of their current level.  Children won't be with the same children all year in their groups, since all children learn at a different pace.

OUR READING STRATEGIES

1.  Look at the pictures
2.  Sound it out
3.  Look for chunks
4.  Skip the word
5.  Go back
6.  Does it make sense?
7.  Ask someone

We use these strategies daily during our reading group time.  These are the strategies that can be reinforced while reading their stories at home.

Centers:  We do centers during reading group time and the children get to explore each center during the week.
